Refrigerant is the part that decides where a unit goes. A dead refrigerator or freezer goes through the appropriate appliance and refrigerant recycling channel, and knowing which one is our part in it; you don’t have to figure any of that out.
A fridge that still runs is a completely different decision. One with useful life left is sometimes repaired inexpensively and given to a family who needs it, depending on the unit.
Once the refrigerant is handled, the metal goes on to scrap recycling rather than being buried.
