Desk removal looks straightforward until the moment two people try to lift a 350-pound solid-wood executive desk from a second-floor home office. The original delivery happened with three people, a furniture dolly, and an empty house. The removal happens with the floor refinished, the doorway trim replaced, and a custom rug the customer doesn’t want scratched. Operationally we account for that. The desk is leaving regardless; the rest of the house should look the same when we’re done.

The most common call is the home-office reset — the same wave that produced the office-chair calls since 2023. The IKEA-style modular desk that worked for two years comes apart and ships out; sometimes the matching credenza goes too. Small business cleanouts are higher-volume work: cubicle desks, reception-area desks, conference tables. Estate cleanouts produce executive desks from den or library setups, often the heaviest single item in the home.

Operationally, desks split into three weight bands. Modular desks (particle-board IKEA-style, ready-to-assemble) come apart in the room — top off the legs, drawer banks separate, three or four pieces ride flat. Solid-wood executive desks are heavier (200-400 pounds) and often need partial disassembly: the file pedestals unbolt from underneath the desktop, the legs separate from the apron on traditional builds. Built-in desks are the rare third case — sometimes installed during a custom build, requiring partial demolition to remove the panels and brackets that anchored the desk to the wall.

Desks are deceptively heavy — especially executive desks with file pedestals and integrated drawer banks. We’ve moved desks out of second-floor home offices that required disassembly mid-stairwell because the original delivery involved a furniture dolly the homeowner doesn’t have. We bring the dolly. We bring the tools. The customer doesn’t need to figure out how to extract their old desk.

What we haul

Specifically, what we take for desk removal.

  • Modular desks (IKEA-style, ready-to-assemble particle-board)
  • Solid-wood executive desks (oak, mahogany, cherry, walnut)
  • L-shaped corner desks and modular L-setups
  • Conference-room desks and tables
  • Reception-area desks and check-in desks
  • Standing desks (manual and electric height-adjustable)
  • Treadmill desks and walking-pad desks
  • Computer desks with hutch attachments
  • Cubicle desks and modular workstation surfaces
  • Drafting tables and architectural drawing desks

How we work

How we actually handle it.

Modular desks come apart fast. Most have visible bolts under the desktop and at the leg-to-apron junctions. We pull the bolts, separate the components, and the desk rides as three or four flat pieces. Multi-desk loads from offices stack the disassembled pieces efficiently — the truck holds far more disassembled desks than assembled ones.

Solid-wood executive desks take longer because the disassembly is mechanical work, not just bolt removal. File pedestals unbolt from the underside of the desktop with three or four screws. Legs on traditional builds separate from the apron via through-bolts. The desk components ride separately. We bring sockets, screwdrivers, and the right wrench for the bolt heads.

Built-in desks require partial demolition. We don’t cut walls, but we do pull the desk components free of the brackets and screws that anchored them. The demoed components ride out as construction debris alongside the desk surface.

Pricing

How pricing works.

Desk pricing scales with material, size, and access. A small home-office IKEA desk from a ground floor is the lightest version. A 350-pound solid-wood executive desk from a third-floor office with a tight stairwell is the heaviest. Built-in desks price higher because of the demolition time.

Phone quotes work for standard desks. Photos help when the desk is unusually large, when it’s built into the wall, or when the carry-out path has a tight turn. Multi-desk commercial cleanouts (5-15 desks from an office consolidation) cost less per desk than single-desk visits.

Disassembly is included in the price. The customer doesn’t pay separately for the time we spend taking the desk apart — that’s part of removing the desk.

The honest exceptions

What we won’t take — for this item.

A short, honest list of edge cases we either won’t take or want to discuss before we show up. When in doubt, call us — we’ll walk through it before scheduling.

  • Custom-built-in desks requiring carpentry beyond standard bracket release
  • Granite, marble, or natural-stone desktops exceeding safe two-or-three-person carry weight
  • Salvage of working desk components (drawer slides, hardware, hutch panels) for resale
  • Desks contaminated with hazardous materials, mold beyond surface, or biohazards
