Replacement windows and doors leave their predecessors behind, and around here that happens a lot. Coastal Georgia is hard on exterior openings — salt air corrodes hardware, humidity swells and rots wood frames, and older aluminum single-pane units get replaced with something that holds conditioned air and stands up to a storm. The new units go in, and eight old windows end up leaning against the garage wall where they will stay until somebody deals with them.
Sometimes the installer hauls the old ones. Frequently they do not, or they take the windows and leave the storm doors and the sliding panel. That leftover stack is most of this work.
Glass is what makes it different from hauling lumber. An old window is a pane in a frame, and once it has been pulled out of a wall and stacked outside for a few weeks, it is a pane in a frame that has been bumped, flexed, and possibly already cracked without anybody noticing. We do not carry loose glass and we do not stack panes in the truck and hope. Units get wrapped or contained, broken glass gets swept and boxed rather than picked up by hand, and we go over the ground where the stack was sitting before we leave — because glass chips migrate into gravel and grass and that is where somebody's dog walks.
Sliding glass doors deserve their own mention. A single tempered panel in an aluminum frame is heavy, awkward, and has no good handhold. That is a two-person carry every time, and the panel usually comes out of the frame before either goes anywhere.

How we work
How we actually handle it.
Most of these units are already out of the wall and stacked somewhere — leaned against a garage, laid flat behind the house, or piled beside the driveway after the install crew finished. That is a load-and-go job, and the main variables are how many, how heavy, and how far to the truck.
Glass handling is the real work. Intact units get wrapped or separated so they are not knocking against each other in the truck bed. Anything already broken gets contained rather than carried loose. We sweep the area where the stack was sitting, because glass chips end up in grass and gravel and stay there.
Sliding panels and large fixed windows are two-person lifts. A tempered sliding panel is heavy and has nothing good to grab, and a picture window in a wood frame is worse than it looks. We plan for the pair rather than discovering it at the truck.
Old wood-frame units can be soft. A window that has sat in coastal weather may have a frame that flexes when lifted, which means the glass is under stress. We handle those as if they will break, because sometimes they do.
If the doors or windows are still in the wall, that is removal rather than hauling. We do it — it is simply a different scope, looked at and priced on its own, because trim, siding and the opening left behind all come into it.
Pricing
How pricing works.
Doors and windows price on the same four things: how much room the load takes on the truck, the labor to get it out, the access, and disposal cost. Volume and careful handling lead — a stack of glazed units takes up more truck than the same weight of lumber, and it cannot be thrown in.
Count matters more than size for most jobs. Three windows and an old storm door added to another load is small. A whole-house replacement — twenty units plus a sliding door — is its own visit.
Pulling units still installed in the wall is separate scope. We will look at it and quote it as removal rather than as a haul.

- Window or door installation, repair, or reglazing — we haul the old units, we do not fit the new ones
- Pulling units out of the wall folded into a haul-away price — we do that removal, and it is scoped and priced as its own job because of the trim, siding and opening involved
- Loose broken glass handed over unbagged — tell us it is broken and we will contain it properly
- Units with suspected lead paint or asbestos glazing compound, until properly identified and handled
