Wood paneling removal is a surface tear-out job. Dated wall paneling, sheet paneling, wainscoting, beadboard paneling — the wood comes off the interior wall, and what’s left behind is the wall you’re going to finish next. We pull the sheets, we pull the furring strips behind them, and we pull the nails and adhesive backing so the substrate is ready for the next finish instead of leaving you a wall full of nail heads and old glue.

The angle that matters here: how the paneling was attached decides everything. Sheets that were only nailed come off in big pieces with a pry bar and a little leverage. Sheets that were nailed and glued — which is most of the dated stuff in older Golden Isles homes — come off in fragments, and that’s the slow part of the day. The glue doesn’t let go cleanly; it pulls drywall paper or chunks of the substrate with it, and there’s no way to rush past that without making the wall worse.

We come ready for the wall the paneling is on, not just the paneling itself. Furring strips, finish nails, panel adhesive, the works. The paneling is leaving regardless — the question is what condition the wall is in when we’re done, and we’re honest about that before we start.

What we haul

Specifically, what we take for wood paneling removal.

  • Dated sheet wall paneling (4x8 panels)
  • Wainscoting and beadboard paneling
  • Solid-wood plank paneling and tongue-and-groove
  • Furring strips and nailing strips behind the paneling
  • Finish nails, panel nails, and adhesive backing pulled with the sheets
  • Trim and molding removed to free the paneling

How we work

How we actually handle it.

Two kinds of paneling, two very different days. Paneling that was only nailed to studs or furring is the fast version — we find the nail lines, work a pry bar behind the sheet, and lift it off in large pieces. The furring strips come off after, and the nails come out with the strips. Open walls like that can move quickly.

Glued paneling is the slow part, and it’s the more common one in older homes. When a sheet was both nailed and glued, the adhesive holds harder than the nails, and the sheet comes off in fragments rather than whole pieces. Pulling glued paneling almost always tears the surface underneath — drywall paper, plaster skim, or chunks of the substrate come with it. That’s not a sign something went wrong; it’s just what glued paneling does. We talk through what the wall will look like before we commit to it.

Either way, the cleanup is the part most haulers skip. Furring strips get pried off, finish nails get pulled, and the adhesive residue left on the wall gets discussed on site — some of it scrapes off, some of it doesn’t, and what stays is a finish-trade problem rather than a tear-out one. We leave the wall as ready as a tear-out can leave it, and we’re clear about where our scope ends.

Pricing

How pricing works.

Paneling pricing scales with how much wall is covered, how it was attached, and how clean the wall behind it needs to be. A single accent wall of nailed sheet paneling is the lightest version of this job. Multiple rooms of glued paneling with wainscoting and trim to work around is the heaviest, because the glue turns every sheet into a fragment job.

Call us with the rooms and what the paneling looks like — or send photos — and we’ll give you a real number. We don’t quote paneling by the panel like every wall is the same, because the glue is the variable and you can’t see it from a thumbnail. We price the job in front of us.

The honest exceptions

What we won’t take — for this item.

A short, honest list of edge cases we either won’t take or want to discuss before we show up. When in doubt, call us — we’ll walk through it before scheduling.

  • Patching, skim-coating, or refinishing the wall after the paneling is off — that’s a contractor or finish trade
  • Removing load-bearing or structural walls — we do non-structural surface tear-out only
  • Electrical, plumbing, or anything else living behind the wall — call a licensed trade for that
