The 40 yard is the top of our size range, and choosing it is almost always a volume decision rather than a weight one. It is the container for jobs that produce a great deal of bulky, light material — framing offcuts, drywall, cabinetry, packaging, furniture, general construction and cleanout debris — where two smaller containers would mean two deliveries, two hauls, and a gap in the middle of the job.
The thing worth understanding before you pick it is that a 40 yard is not simply "a 30 yard with more room." The extra capacity comes from size in every direction, which means two practical consequences. It needs more space to sit and more room for the delivery truck to set it and retrieve it — a driveway that comfortably takes a 20 yard is not automatically a driveway that takes a 40. And the walls are taller, so everything that goes in has to be lifted or tossed higher. That is fine for cardboard and cabinetry and awkward for anything you would rather roll in over the side.
Weight is where the 40 yard stops being the answer, and it stops being the answer sooner than people expect. Dense material — concrete, brick, dirt, tile, roofing tear-off — reaches haulable weight at a small fraction of a 40 yard's volume. A 40 yard full of concrete is not a container, it is a problem. That material belongs in a 10 yard run as multiple loads, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than deliver the wrong box.
So the honest rule for this size: use the 40 yard when the pile is large and light, and size down when it is heavy. If you are not sure which you have, describe the heaviest thing going in it and we will size it for you. - Hazardous material — paint, solvents, fuels, oils, chemicals, batteries, asbestos
- Refrigerant-bearing appliances loaded into the container; those are removed separately so they can be routed to a facility set up to recover it
- Tires, which do not travel with a general load and are handled on their own
- Anything loaded above the top rail — an overfilled container cannot be legally or safely hauled

How pricing works on these jobs.
The 40 yard is quoted per job. What goes into the number is the material and its weight, how long the container stays, where it sits, and where you are in the service area. We do not publish a price chart for containers any more than we do for hauling, because the honest number depends on those things and a chart would just be a figure we would have to revise.
The one conversation worth having before we quote is the material, and it is the conversation that saves people the most money on this size. A 40 yard is for light, bulky debris. If what you are throwing away is dense, the right answer is a smaller container run more than once, and it usually costs less than the wrong container run once.
