- Weight and labor dominate here rather than volume: a pile you can step over can outweigh a truckload of furniture, and dense material carries a real disposal cost. Access matters more than usual because everything is hand-loaded. Breaking up intact slab is separate scope discussed at the estimate.

Masonry is the one category where the customer's estimate and ours are furthest apart, and it is never the customer's fault. Every other kind of junk trains you to think in volume — a couch is a couch, a garage full is a garage full. Concrete breaks that instinct completely. A pile you could step over can outweigh an entire truckload of household furniture, and a small patio's worth of broken slab is a genuinely heavy day.
So we price masonry by weight, not by how much room it takes up, and we say that before anybody schedules anything. It is the honest way to handle a material where the visual and the reality disagree this badly.
Around here the pile usually comes from one of a handful of jobs. A patio or walkway came out. A brick planter or mailbox column got knocked down. A seawall or paver driveway got redone and the contractor hauled most of it but left the last third. Storm work turns up masonry too — pier footings, block, and broken slab that came loose when something else went down. Older Brunswick and downtown properties add brick specifically, because there is a lot of it, and because when an old chimney or planter comes apart it comes apart heavy.
The other thing worth saying plainly: breaking up an intact slab is not the same job as hauling a pile that is already broken. Demolition is a conversation we have at the estimate, not something we assume. If you have a poured patio that needs to become a pile first, tell us — that changes the equipment, the crew and the day.

How we work
How we actually handle it.
This is hand-loading work. Broken masonry gets carried or wheeled to the truck piece by piece, which is why access matters more here than for almost anything else we haul. A pile at the end of a driveway is a straightforward job. The same pile behind a fence, across a soft back yard, or up a flight of steps is a materially different one.
Weight governs everything. We load to what the truck can legally and safely carry, not to what fits in the bed — which means a big masonry job can be several trips rather than one, and we schedule it that way instead of overloading and hoping. Rain matters too: coastal ground goes soft fast, and a truck that sinks is nobody's good afternoon. We may stage further out and wheel the load, which is slower and worth planning for.
We do not mix masonry into a general household load. It goes on its own for weight reasons and because the disposal route is different from furniture and household junk.
If the concrete is still in one piece and needs breaking up, that is demolition rather than hauling. We do that work — it just gets looked at and priced as its own job rather than quoted like a haul-away, because what it takes depends on thickness, reinforcement and what we can get to it.
Pricing
How pricing works.
Masonry prices on the same four things as any job — how much there is, the labor to get it out, the access, and disposal cost — but the weighting is different. Weight and labor dominate, and disposal for dense material is its own real cost rather than a rounding error.
That is why we will not quote a concrete pile from a description over the phone. "About a pickup load" means something very different for brick than it does for cardboard. Send a photo with something in frame for scale, tell us roughly how deep the pile goes, and tell us how far it is from where a truck can park.
Breaking up intact slab, footings, or a standing structure is separate scope. We will discuss it at the estimate rather than folding an unknown into a haul-away number.
