Filing cabinet removal sits at the intersection of furniture and paperwork. The cabinet is the easy part — steel construction, predictable weight, two-person carry. The paperwork inside is what slows the visit. Most filing cabinets that come out of estates and small businesses haven’t been touched in five to ten years; the contents are a mix of records the customer thinks they should keep, records they’re sure they don’t need, and records they’d rather not be seen reading aloud at the truck.

The most common call is the home office cleanout where the filing cabinet held tax records, household paperwork, and warranty manuals from 1998 through 2018. Small business cleanouts are higher-volume work — five or six cabinets at once, often paired with the matching desks and chairs we haul in the same visit. Estate cleanouts produce filing cabinets full of decades of paperwork the family is mid-way through sorting; we coordinate around their pace, sometimes pulling cabinets in stages as the family finishes reviewing the contents.

Operationally, filing cabinets split into three weight bands. Two-drawer laterals (the wide, short style) run 60 to 100 pounds empty — easy two-person carry, easy on stairs. Four-drawer vertical cabinets are the office-supply-store standard at 100 to 150 pounds empty; the tall narrow shape is more awkward on stairs than the lateral version. Five-drawer commercial cabinets push 150 to 300 pounds empty and sometimes need three crew members on stair work. Drawers full of paperwork add weight fast — a four-drawer cabinet stuffed with files can hit 350 pounds. Empty drawers before pickup or we charge for the extra time and weight.

Filing cabinets full of decades of paperwork are an estate-cleanout specialty. We’ve cleared cabinets from offices where the customer’s parent ran the business for forty years — every receipt, every tax return, every contract going back to the seventies. The customer doesn’t always know what to keep. We don’t pretend to know either. We coordinate with shredding partners for sensitive documents and route the rest to paper recycling. The cabinets themselves go to scrap metal. No landfill needed for the steel; no flea-market fate for the paperwork.

What we haul

Specifically, what we take for filing cabinet removal.

  • Two-drawer lateral filing cabinets
  • Four-drawer vertical filing cabinets (the office-supply-store standard)
  • Five-drawer commercial filing cabinets
  • Letter-size and legal-size cabinets
  • Locked cabinets with or without keys
  • Fire-resistant filing cabinets (heavier — sometimes 200+ lbs empty)
  • Mobile filing cabinets (small under-desk units on casters)
  • Lateral file towers and modular filing systems
  • Failed cabinets (drawers stuck, locks broken, water-damaged frames)
  • Multi-cabinet office cleanouts (5-15 cabinets at once)

How we work

How we actually handle it.

Single-cabinet pickups run fifteen to thirty minutes depending on the size and whether the drawers are loaded. Empty cabinets are the fast version — two-person carry, dolly on stairs. Loaded cabinets need the contents handled first; we either coordinate with the customer to empty drawers in advance or we empty on site and bag the paperwork by drawer for routing.

Locked cabinets without keys are routine. We can usually pry them open if the customer wants the contents reviewed first; otherwise we haul whole and the contents go to landfill or shredding partner depending on the customer’s instruction. Fire-resistant cabinets are heavier than they look — the inner steel-and-gypsum construction adds significant weight, and the doors are often rated to hold their seal during a fire, which makes them stiff to open. Same disposal route, slightly more crew time.

Multi-cabinet office cleanouts are the higher-volume work. Five or six cabinets at once, sometimes paired with desks and chairs we haul the same visit. We stack cabinets on the truck after partial-disassembly when the load is large — most cabinets allow drawer removal, which makes the bodies stack more efficiently.

Pricing

How pricing works.

Filing cabinet pricing scales with size, weight, and access. A small two-drawer lateral from a ground-floor home office is the lightest version. A loaded five-drawer commercial cabinet from a third-floor office with stairs-only access is the heaviest. Loaded drawers add significant weight; emptying ahead of time saves the customer money on the visit.

Phone quotes work for filing cabinet jobs as long as we know the size, the count, and the floor. Photos help when the cabinet is unusually large (legal-size or commercial-grade) or when the carry-out path has tight stairwell clearance. Multi-cabinet commercial cleanouts (combined with desks and chairs) cost less per piece than single-cabinet visits because the visit consolidates the load.

Paper-handling routing — shredding partner coordination, paper recycling, contents bagging — is included in the price when the volume is reasonable. Very high-volume paperwork (hundreds of pounds of records) is sometimes scoped as its own line item because the shredding cost passes through.

The honest exceptions

What we won’t take — for this item.

A short, honest list of edge cases we either won’t take or want to discuss before we show up. When in doubt, call us — we’ll walk through it before scheduling.

  • Active filing of customer-sensitive records — we don’t review or sort the contents; that’s the customer’s scope
  • Cabinets with confirmed pest infestation (silverfish, rodents) that hasn’t been treated — call us first
  • Cabinets contaminated with hazardous materials, mold beyond surface, or biohazards
  • On-site shredding service — we coordinate with shredding partners, but the shredding itself happens at their facility
