Flat-pack furniture has one trait that defines every job we run with it: it does not come apart cleanly a second time. The IKEA-style dresser that snapped together in an afternoon was built to be assembled once and left alone. By the time you’re done with it, the cam-lock hardware has stripped, the glued joints have started to crumble, and the panels won’t separate the way they went together.
So we don’t usually unscrew flat-pack furniture — we break it down. A particleboard bookcase that won’t fit through the doorway gets taken apart by force, not by Allen key. That makes the work fast but messy: particleboard and MDF crack along the edges, laminate flakes, and the cam-lock pins rarely back out the way they’re supposed to. We come ready for that, and we clean up after it.
The other reality worth saying out loud: most flat-pack furniture is particleboard or MDF, and once it’s been taken apart it can’t be donated. A piece that survives intact might find a second home — but a dresser that came out of the room in three broken sections is heading to the landfill, and we’ll tell you that on site rather than promise otherwise.

Flat-pack furniture breaks apart — it doesn’t unscrew. We’ll try the hardware first when a piece is small enough to walk out whole, but most of the time the cam-locks are stripped or the joints are glued, and the honest move is to break the piece down in the room. A bookcase that came in flat goes out flat, just not in the same panels it arrived in.
That speed comes with mess. Particleboard cracks, laminate edges flake, and the screws and cam pins scatter. We bring what we need to contain it and we sweep up the room before we leave — the furniture is leaving regardless, and your floor shouldn’t pay for it.
Because the material is light, these jobs move quickly. A flat-pack dresser or a couple of shelving units is usually an in-and-out call. The time only stretches when there are several pieces, a tight stairwell, or a wardrobe that has to come apart panel by panel to clear the door.

A single particleboard bookcase is the smallest version of this job; a bedroom’s worth of flat-pack — dresser, nightstands, bed frame, and a wardrobe — is the larger one. The breakdown work is quick, which keeps these jobs efficient compared to solid-wood furniture of the same footprint.
