Wardrobes and armoires are some of the most awkward pieces of furniture to remove because they were almost always assembled in the room. The original delivery happened in pieces — flat-packed cabinet sides, doors in their own boxes, top and back panels separately — and the room got finished after the wardrobe went in. The doorway trim, the wallpaper, the new floor — all of it happened with the wardrobe already in place. Now the customer wants the piece out, and the doorway is narrower than the wardrobe by an inch or two.

The most common call is bedroom furniture replacement. Modern bedrooms come with built-in closets that handle the storage a wardrobe used to. Old wardrobes from previous-house furniture get retired during a redecorate or a downsize. Estate cleanouts produce wardrobes from older homes — often heirloom solid-wood pieces, sometimes antique armoires that the family thinks might have value. Move-out cleanouts where the previous tenants couldn’t fit the wardrobe in the moving truck.

Operationally, wardrobes and armoires split into two weight bands. Modern wardrobes (IKEA-style, ready-to-assemble particle-board) come apart with screws and cam locks; the doors release at the hinges, the back panel pulls off, and the cabinet sides separate. The whole piece rides flat in three or four sections. Solid-wood wardrobes — and antique armoires — are heavier (200-400 pounds typical, 500+ for full antique builds) and require door removal, sometimes shelf removal, and occasionally back-panel separation to clear stairwell turns or upstairs doorways. Two-person carry minimum; three or four for the heaviest pieces.

We don’t appraise antique armoires. If the customer thinks the piece might have value, we suggest checking with a local antique dealer in Brunswick or St. Simons before scheduling pickup. Once the customer is sure the piece is going, we route donation-grade solid-wood pieces to thrift partners or antique consignment when the partner network supports it. Damaged wardrobes and ready-to-assemble pieces past their useful life route to disposal through the same channel as the rest of the furniture load.

How we work

How we actually handle it.

Most wardrobe jobs run forty to ninety minutes depending on size and access. Door removal happens first — wardrobes with attached doors usually have one or two screws per hinge, sometimes a removable hinge pin. Doors off, the cabinet width drops by four to six inches, which is often enough to clear a doorway that wouldn’t accommodate the assembled piece.

Solid-wood wardrobes sometimes need the back panel separated before the carry. The back panel is typically tacked on with small nails or stapled to the cabinet sides; pulling it off doesn’t damage the structural integrity for transport, and the panel rides separately on the truck. Modern ready-to-assemble wardrobes come apart fully — we unscrew the cam locks at the corners, separate the cabinet sides, and the wardrobe rides flat as three or four pieces.

Stairs are real on wardrobes. Bedroom wardrobes almost always live on second floors, and the carry-down is the slowest part of the work. We bring straps, pads, and a stair-rated dolly. For the heaviest antique pieces, a third or fourth crew member sometimes joins on stair work. Floor protection goes down before the carry begins.

Pricing

How pricing works.

Wardrobe pricing scales with material, size, weight, and access. A small modern wardrobe from a ground floor is the lightest version. A 400-pound antique armoire from a third-floor bedroom with a tight stairwell turn is the heaviest. Door removal and back-panel separation are part of the work, not separate line items.

Phone quotes work for standard wardrobes. Photos help when the piece is unusually large, when it’s antique solid-wood the customer wants quoted accurately, or when the carry-out path has tight stairwell clearance. Multi-piece bedroom-set jobs (wardrobe plus dresser plus headboard plus mattress) cost less per piece than single-item pickups.

Disassembly is included. The customer doesn’t pay separately for the time we spend taking the wardrobe apart — that’s part of the work.

The honest exceptions

What we won’t take — for this item.

A short, honest list of edge cases we either won’t take or want to discuss before we show up. When in doubt, call us — we’ll walk through it before scheduling.

  • Antique armoires the customer believes are worth selling — we don’t appraise; check with a local antique dealer first
  • Built-in closets requiring carpentry beyond standard panel release
  • Wardrobes contaminated with mold beyond surface, biohazards, or hazardous materials
  • Wardrobes with confirmed pest infestation that has not been treated — call us first
