Pricing
How pricing works.
What fireplace mantel removal costs here. We price by the tier your items fill, starting at $95–$150 for a 1/8 truck; a single item is quoted from a photo so we can confirm the tier before anything is loaded. The number you agree to is the number you pay, and it includes carry-out, the disposal fee and cleanup.
Mantel pricing scales with how the surround was built and how it was fastened. A single mantel shelf on a couple of brackets is the lightest version of this job. A full floor-to-ceiling surround with an overmantel, paneling, and adhesive-set MDF is heavier — more pieces, more fasteners, more debris, and more care taken to keep the demolition contained to the trim.
Call us with what you have, or send a photo of the fireplace wall, and we will give you a real number. We do not quote a flat per-mantel rate that pretends every surround is the same, because the fastening and the size are what drive the work, and those vary house to house.
Part of our Construction Debris Removal service
Fireplace mantel removal is a trim-and-cabinetry job, not a masonry job. What we take out is the decorative wood or MDF piece that frames the fireplace — the mantelpiece, the legs and breastwork of the surround, and the overmantel above it. That assembly is fastened to the wall with screws, nails, brackets, or construction adhesive, and once a homeowner has decided on a new look, the old one has to come off the wall before anything new goes on.
Most of these calls come in mid-renovation. A new surround is on order, or a flat-screen is going where the overmantel is now, and the existing mantel is in the way. We pull it down in pieces small enough to carry, get the fasteners and brackets off the wall face, and clear the debris so the next person — painter, finish carpenter, whoever is mounting the new piece — walks into a clean wall instead of a half-demolished one.
What we take is the decorative wood or MDF mantel and surround — legs, breastwork, overmantel, trim — off the wall and out of the house, while the brick, stone, or masonry firebox and chimney stay right where they are. If there’s a gas fireplace below, once the gas side is handled, the mantel is ours.
What we haul
Specifically, what we take for fireplace mantel removal.
- Wood and MDF fireplace mantels and mantelpieces
- Decorative, non-structural fireplace surrounds (legs, breastwork, trim)
- Overmantels and decorative panels above the firebox
- Mantel shelves and corbels fastened to the wall
- Fastening hardware - screws, nails, mounting brackets, cleats
- The wood and MDF debris from the demolished surround
How we work
Removing a Fireplace Mantel From an Older Brunswick Home
A typical mantel comes off in a predictable order. The shelf and any overmantel come down first, then the surround framing around the firebox, then the brackets and cleats left on the wall. Older mantels were often screwed or nailed into wall studs or into a wood ground set into the masonry. Newer builder-grade surrounds are frequently MDF held with construction adhesive, and those fight back — the adhesive lets go in chunks and takes paint and sometimes a skim of drywall with it.
We work to bring the piece down without tearing into anything we are not supposed to touch. The wall behind the mantel almost always shows where the surround was: fastener holes, adhesive residue, an unpainted ghost line, sometimes the bare masonry face the trim was hiding. That is normal, and it is the wall the new surround or finish work will cover or patch.
If the mantel is wrapped tight to a brick chimney breast, we take the wood off the brick and leave the brick alone. If there is a gas fireplace below, we start once the gas connection has been handled by a licensed gas professional. We come ready to remove decorative trim and haul it out clean.
In an older home in Old Town Brunswick or the South End, the mantel coming down may be original wood under several coats of paint, or a builder-grade MDF surround from a later remodel. Both come off the same careful way: the shelf first, then the legs and breastwork, with the brick and the firebox left exactly as they are. A photo of the fireplace and the room tells us which kind you have and what it takes, and that sets the price. Remodel scraps, old tile or a stack of cabinet doors can go on the same trip, for renovations anywhere in our Brunswick coverage.
