We bring the hands each window unit needs. They slip when the carry angle changes and the corner edges dig in, so one person on each side is how a unit comes down the stairs without a dent in the wall. An upper-floor unit just adds stair work.

In the older structures of the historic district, around Stable Road for instance, a window unit can sit in an old wooden sash. That one comes out slowly: the sash goes up, the brackets come loose, and the unit eases back into the room without the corners biting into old wood before it goes down the stairs by hand.

In the rental condos, several units can come out at once when an owner replaces them all. Property managers plan that kind of maintenance around guest windows, and we fit the removal into the gap between one stay and the next.

Whether the house sits up in the historic district or down toward St. Andrews Beach at the south end, the units leave with us instead of waiting by the road for a pickup. They cross the bridge on our truck, and that round trip is priced in from the start.

Window and portable ACs hold sealed refrigerant, so they go through the appropriate appliance and refrigerant recycling channel, usually SA Recycling in Brunswick, where the refrigerant is recovered.

A unit that still cools is a different story. One with life left in it is sometimes repaired inexpensively and given to a family who needs it, depending on the unit.
