Work around the historic hotel and the older homes near it comes up less often than rental work, and it tends to be careful work when it does: older structures and tighter coordination around preserved buildings. A heavy table in one of the historic cottages in the Historic District or in a house off Old Plantation Road gets planned from photos before we arrive, down to which door it leaves by.

Elsewhere on the island, the reason is usually simpler: a new set is arriving, a rental is being refurnished between seasons, or a family is clearing a house. Property managers don’t want surprises on the schedule or the invoice, so the plan and the price are settled before the day.

Whatever the reason, the set leaves the island with us. A good table and its chairs are easier to place together than apart, so we keep a set whole where its condition allows.

Chairs stack or ride flat, so six or eight add volume more than weight, and a set of stools nests easily on the load.

If a solid-wood table won’t clear a doorway whole, the legs unbolt from the frame underneath. We bring the tools for it.

Hutches, buffets and china cabinets can go on the same visit.
