What counts as church, school and event furniture?
Anything that was bought by the dozen for a building full of people. In a church that means pews, the pulpit and lectern, the communion table, choir chairs and risers, robe cabinets, hymnal racks, and back in the fellowship hall the Sunday school tables, nursery cribs and the upright piano. In a school it’s student desks, gray steel teacher’s desks, banks of lockers, slate chalkboards, AV carts and library shelving.
Then there’s the furniture that lives in storage rooms: folding banquet tables, metal and padded folding chairs, stacking chairs by the hundred, chair trucks, coat racks and bulletin board cabinets. And the seating outside or in the auditorium — aluminum and wooden bleachers, fold-back gym bleachers, rows of theater seats on cast-iron standards.
These jobs come from renovations, replacement orders, congregations combining buildings, daycares and tutoring centers changing over, halls retiring worn stock. They also come from one person with one old school desk in the garage, and that’s a real job too. The list below shows every item in the group and the other names people use for them.

How a sanctuary, classroom or storage room gets emptied
It starts with photos and a count — how many pews and how long, how many desks, roughly how many chairs — plus the way out. That’s enough for a firm price. Whoever handles it for the building, a pastor, a trustee, a principal or a facilities manager, is who we work out the details with.
Long pieces set the plan. A pew leaves whole when the doors and the aisle allow it and in sections when they don’t; a balcony pew comes down the stair on its end with a hand at each end and the walls covered at the turn. Steel desks ride out on a dolly, locker banks go as a unit when they stand on their own, and a slate chalkboard travels flat and supported because it cracks if it flexes. Folding tables and chairs go out by the stack along a cleared line from the storage room to the truck. Aluminum bleachers come apart into planks, risers and frame sections, and theater rows into seats and standards; rusted hardware that won’t turn gets cut.
Some of it is fastened to the floor or the wall — pews, lockers, theater rows. That’s no reason to wait: send us a few photos and tell us where it is, and we’ll tell you what it takes.
The calendar matters as much as the carry. We work a weekday between services, over a school break, on a weekend, or on a day the hall is dark, and a big job can run in phases, sanctuary first and classrooms later, on one plan. If a pew carries a memorial plaque a family wants back, or the congregation wants a few pieces kept, tell us and it gets set aside before anything is loaded.
Steel desks, lockers, chair frames, bleacher planks and frames usually go to scrap recycling, often at SA Recycling in Brunswick. Pieces in good shape may find a second life with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Salvation Army or Goodwill; they decide what they can take, and condition matters.
What changes the price
These jobs price by how much of the truck they fill, on the same tiers as anything else. Pews fill a truck by length as much as weight, so a row of them climbs the tiers quickly. Steel desks, lockers and slate boards are heavy for their size. Folding tables and stacked chairs pack tight, so a big count often lands lower than the storage room suggests. Stairs, a balcony, a long walk from the back of the building and the distance from a ball field to where the truck can sit all add time.
A whole building, or a job that runs in phases, is quoted as one project from photos or a walkthrough. The minimum for any pickup is $95.
