Taking Out an Old Fireplace Mantel in a St. Simons Home?

Same-Day Fireplace Mantel Removal on St. Simons Often Available — Call or Text

Can we take your mantel out? Yes. Taking one down is trim-and-cabinetry work, not masonry: the shelf, the legs and breastwork of the surround, any overmantel above it, and the brackets and cleats that held it all up. It comes down in pieces we can carry, and the wall is left clear for whoever works on it next.

Most of these calls come mid-renovation, with a new surround on order or a TV headed for the spot where the overmantel hangs now.

Mantels in island homes

St. Simons has plenty of homes with real history in them, and an old mantel can be one of the things in a room that matters. A solid-wood mantelpiece in a house in Glynn Haven may deserve a second look before anyone calls it debris. If it might carry value or meaning, we set it aside and ask you before it goes anywhere.

A newer surround in a home in St. Simons Heights is often a different story: MDF glued to the wall that lets go in chunks. Either way the work stays contained to the trim, and the path from the room to the door stays clear.

Condos are their own planning job. A mantel coming out of a unit means an elevator, a hallway and a place for the truck to stop, and association requirements can shape the day. We settle that with you before we come, not at the door.

Move-outs and rental turnovers run heavy on the island from April into September, and we plan a mantel removal around your remodel either way.

What we handle

How it comes off the wall

Shelf and overmantel first, then the surround around the firebox, then the brackets and cleats left behind. Older mantels are usually screwed or nailed into the studs or into a wood ground set in the masonry; newer MDF surrounds are often glued, and the adhesive can take paint and a skim of drywall with it.

Where the mantel wraps a brick chimney breast, we take the wood off the brick and leave the brick alone. The wall will show where the surround sat — holes, residue, a paint line — and that’s normal; patching and painting it is finish work for your contractor or painter.

Gas logs underneath? Once the gas side has been handled, the mantel is ours, and we’ll fit our day around that when we quote.

Wiring for a TV or sconces run through the surround? When licensed electrical or plumbing work is needed, that’s normally handled by you or a licensed pro. Show us what you have and where it is, and we’ll help figure out what’s needed and work around it.

A stone shelf or a mantel built into the masonry? Send us a few photos and tell us where it is, and we’ll tell you what it takes.

What we haul

What we take

  • Wood and MDF mantels and mantelpieces
  • Surround legs, breastwork and trim
  • Overmantels and decorative panels
  • Mantel shelves and corbels
  • Brackets, cleats, screws and nails pulled from the wall
  • The debris from the tear-out

Pricing

What changes the price

How the surround was built and how it’s held on. A single shelf on a couple of brackets is the lightest version; a floor-to-ceiling surround with an overmantel and glued MDF means more pieces, more fasteners and more care. Then the carry: what floor the room is on, and whether an elevator or stairs sit between it and the truck.

Firm price from your photos, confirmed before anything is loaded. The minimum for any pickup is $95. We don’t charge extra for same-day pickup when we have an open time slot.

After the pickup

Where the mantel goes

We work out the right destination for the mantel from what it’s made of and the shape it comes off in, and the load goes straight off the island to Brunswick.

A solid-wood mantel that comes down whole can be worth offering to an organization we work with, such as Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They decide what they accept, and condition matters.

Brackets and screws can go for scrap, often at SA Recycling in Brunswick, and broken MDF and glued trim go to disposal.
