Nobody on this coast owns a generator casually. You own one because the power goes out, and it goes out here for reasons that arrive with a name and a forecast cone. That is why the dead ones pile up: a generator is bought under pressure, used hard for a few days, put back in the shed, and then not started again for two years. When the next storm comes and it will not turn over, it gets replaced immediately — nobody is troubleshooting a carburetor with a hurricane inbound — and the old one moves to the back of the shed permanently.
That is most of this work. Portables that sat with old fuel in them until the carburetor gummed up, small units that got run in a flood and never recovered, and construction-site generators at the end of their life. The other half is the opposite situation: a whole-house standby unit gets upgraded, and the old set has to come off its pad.
Two things about this job are firm. Fuel has to be out before we arrive — gasoline, diesel, and oil are not things we haul in a truck with somebody's furniture, and old fuel in particular is a hazardous-material question rather than a nuisance. Drain it, or tell us on the call that you cannot, and we will talk about it before scheduling rather than after.
Standby units are the second one. A whole-house standby is hardwired into your electrical service, usually with a transfer switch and often a gas line. That is an electrician's disconnect, sometimes a plumber's too, and it happens before we touch it. Once it is disconnected and sitting free, it is a heavy object on a pad and that part is genuinely ours.

How we work
How we actually handle it.
Fuel first. Tank empty, and the carburetor bowl drained if you can manage it. If the unit is old enough that the fuel has turned to varnish and will not pour out, tell us on the call — that is a conversation, not a refusal, but it changes what we plan for. We do not haul loose fuel cans, and we do not drain tanks for you.
Portables are mostly a lift-and-load job, with weight being the honest variable. A small inverter generator is a one-person carry. A contractor-grade unit on a frame runs a couple of hundred pounds and comes out with two people and often a ramp, especially out of a shed with a step at the door or across soft coastal ground after rain.
Standby units are heavier still and bolted to a pad. Any electrical or gas disconnect has to be handled by the appropriate qualified person before we arrive — an electrician for the service and transfer switch, a qualified gas fitter for a natural-gas or propane line. We are not electricians and we do not pretend to be. If you are not sure who to call, tell us and we will help you coordinate it. Once the unit is free, we unbolt it from the pad and take it. The pad itself stays unless you have asked about removing it, which is a masonry question.
Batteries come out separately where a unit has one. A damaged or swollen battery is something we want identified before we load anything.
Old generators are also mostly metal, which means much of what we take goes to scrap rather than landfill.

Generators price on the four factors: how much room the unit takes on the truck, the labor to get it out of where it sits, the access, and disposal cost. Weight and access lead — a generator is compact and heavy, which is the opposite of most household items.

Metal content works in your favour on disposal, since much of a generator is recoverable as scrap rather than landfilled.
